Russia's counter-intelligence services unmasked 93 spies in 2007, said the director of the Federal Security Service (FSB), Nikolai Patrushev, Russian news agencies reported. "This year we have put an end to the activities of 22 controllers and 71 agents of foreign special services," Patrushev was quoted as saying by Interfax.
Controllers are typically full-time intelligence officers representing the country carrying out the spying, while agents could be citizens of either the country spying or being spied-upon. According to Patrushev, 11 controllers had been "caught red-handed in illegal activities."
