Three British-linked detainees in the US prison camp at Guantanamo Bay have been released and are returning to Britain, the Foreign Office and police said Wednesday.
Jamil El Banna, Omar Deghayes and Abdennour Sameur, all former British residents, were due to arrive back in the country "imminently", a Foreign Office spokesman told AFP. "Three men who were detained at Guantanamo Bay by the US authorities are en route to the UK and will arrive later today," added a statement by Scotland Yard. The three were on a chartered plane accompanied by anti-terrorist officers, a doctor and uniformed police. A spokesman would not say whether police were planning to arrest them on arrival in Britain, nor at which airport they were due.
The men are not British citizens but all lived in the country legally before being detained at the Guantanamo Bay US naval base in Cuba.
