Fabio Capello has received his first setback in his bid to revive England's football fortunes after Jamie Carragher said he was unlikely to agree a return to international football.
The Liverpool defender made himself unavailable for selection under Capello's predecessor Steve McClaren having grown disillusioned with a lack of opportunities in his favoured centreback role. Speculation that Capello could try to entice Carragher back were fuelled when the Italian observed that he could not understand why some of England's best players had removed themselves from the national squad.
Carragher, who is widely admired around Europe for the defensive displays that have helped Liverpool to reach two of the last three Champions League finals, was thought to be one of the players Capello was referring to.
But the 29-year-old has indicated that the Italian manager will have his work cut out if he attempts to persuade him out of international retirement. Asked if he might make an international comeback, Carragher replied: "I don't think so." Speaking to Liverpool TV, Carragher added: "I'm happy with the way things are now and I get to have a break with the family as well now (in international weeks). I cannot see that changing."
