The load shedding would also be carried out on Eid days in the city as Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) is still facing a shortage of more than 200 MW electricity to cater to the power needs of the city.
Sources at KESC told Business Recorder on Thursday that all measures taken by the KESC to avoid carrying out load shedding on Eid seems to fail as one unit of Korangi Thermal Power Station (KTPS) has gone out of bar unexpectedly. The KESC was forced to shut the generating Unit No 3 of KTPS on December 12 as high vibration was witnessed in it, official sources said.
The generating unit is still close and the date of its resumption was unpredictable, as the KESC's engineers could not locate the fault so far in it, they maintained. The unit was generating 80 MW electricity before its closure.
Meanwhile, Kanupp also disconnected its supply of more 75 MW to KESC since December 12. The KESC officials stated the tripping off a unit as the reason of this cut in supply, that could not be restored so far. It is noted that the generating Unit No3 at Bin Qasim Power Station was already closed due to annual maintenance and overhauling for about 30 days from December 4.
According to KESC officials, the unit was of 210 MW capacity but was generating 170 MW before going to closure and is expected to resume functioning in January. Although the Unit No 5 of BQPS that was shut for annual overhauling and maintenance since November 16, has resumed its functioning with enhanced generation capacity of 180 MW from December 19.
But still, the KESC has not sufficient amount of electricity in hand to cater to the power needs of the city, mainly because of the closure of its two generating unit at KTPS and BQPS and disconnection of supply from Kanupp. The peak power demands of the city in recent days was fallen between 1700 to 1760 MW. While the KESC was capable of providing only 1520-1580 MW electricity in peak hours, sources added.
