People of Multan and Southern Punjab celebrated Eid-ul-Azha amid tight security with traditional religious fervour on Friday, in view of the series of recent suicidal attacks.
People of Multan were gloomy after listening the news of Charsadda suicidal attack in Eidgah, which claimed 60 lives. Everyone was panicky. Hundreds of thousands of people have headed to their hometowns from major cities where they were working.
However Bazaars were giving a deserted look as most of the people were engaged in sacrifices of animals. Butchers used delaying tactics to extort demanded money from the people. They charged Rs 500 to 1000 per goat, sheep and Rs 2500 to 3000 for a cow and camel. Huge crowds were seen in recreational parks second day of Eid. Though prices of animals were very high yet number of sacrificial animals were not less than preceding years said a volunteer of NGO.
He said that local religious seminaries, welfare organisations like Edhi centre, Shaukat Khanum, Fatimid, Al-Khidmat, Jihadis collected 5 percent more skins than the last year. Huge crowds were also seen on Sunday at bus and railway stations and the people were complaining of lack of transport and that the transporters were demanding extra money than the fixed fare to take them to their destination.
The faithful offered Eid prayers at more than 200 Eidgahs, mosques and open places. The Imams in their Eid prayers sermons remembered the willingness of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his son Hazrat Ismail (AS) to fulfil the command of Allah Almighty.
After Eid prayers the people slaughtered animals including cows, goats, camels and sheeps to mark the festival. Security remained tight outside mosques, Eidgahs and open places to check any possible incident of violence.
