Major stock markets outside the United States ended on Friday.
EUROPE STOCKS EXCHANGE: European equities ended weaker, snapping a four-day winning run in the year's last full trading session as a slump in US new home sales and credit crunch worries hit markets.
Banks HSBC and Barclays and drug firms GlaxoSmithkline and Sanofi-Aventis figured among the main losers on a day when market volumes totalled about 40 percent of the average of the last 30 days.
The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index closed down 0.2 percent at 1,506.09 after rising nearly two percent in the past four sessions. With one half-day session set for Monday, Europe's benchmark index is up just 1.5 percent this year, recording its worst annual performance since 2002 when it tumbled over 30 percent.
FRANKFURT STOCKS EXCHANGE: The DAX index ended at 8067.32 points, up 28.72 or 0.36 percent, and gaining 64.65 points since last Friday.
PARIS STOCKS EXCHANGE: The CAC-40 index closed at 5627.25 points, down 0.23 of a point, edging up 24.48 points on the week.
ZURICH STOCKS EXCHANGE: The Swiss market index closed at 8484.46 points, down 33.73 or 0.40 percent, but 16.09 points better off on the week.
MILAN STOCKS EXCHANGE: The All Share Mibtel index closed at 29402 points, up 170 or 0.58 percent, adding 307 points since last weekend.
SYDNEY STOCKS EXCHANGE: Australian shares eased 0.17 percent, nudged down by concerns about slowing US growth, though a sharp rise in Fortescue Metals Group helped trim the market's early losses. The S&P/ASX 200 index ended down 11 points at 6,339.9, adding 92.9 points since December 21.
JOHANNESBURG STOCKS EXCHANGE: South Africa's rand climbed to a fresh 2-week high against the dollar, supported by gold and the euro, but geopolitical risks knocked stocks and mining companies shed the previous day's gains. The All-share index closed at 29634.65 points, down 146.74 or 0.49 percent on the day but 302.66 points ahead over the week.
The All Gold index closed at 2311.56 points, down 46.75 or 1.98 percent, adding 14.73 points in the week. The Industrial index closed at 21091.95 points, down 141.4 or 0.67 percent, but gaining 282.12 points over the week.
