It was generally being thought that the rains at the end of December in Karachi would bring cold wave from Quetta, and there would be some chill in the weather, but this did not happen. Instead, the sun shone at its maximum and the temperature continued to go up even before noon each day.
Evenings were simply pleasant as a little bit of sea breeze could visit the urban areas. Only a light quilt remained enough in the nights for a comfortable sleep.
At a time when there should be winter in its true sense, there is uncertainty about weather pattern. This kind of uncertainty was not there only a few years ago. People could predict severity of weather and act accordingly, but now the situation has changed. Strange are the ways of the nature! Is it true? Probably, not - at least in this case.
The meteorological department has its explanation to this kind of change in the weather. Their explanation is simple. The department attributes the falling of rain and increase in temperature to the build up of air pressure somewhere in the sea. Enough. In other words, what had brought rains to Karachi and upsurge in temperature was a simple phenomenon and it should not bother people; this is how the meteorological department takes it. On the contrary, rains are welcome in the beginning of winter season, as these are good for certain crops and health of the people, is another expression of faith associated with winter rainfall.
However, there is no more discussion on this subject of abrupt rise in temperature in December. All queries about this queer atmospheric phenomenon from other knowledgeable people remain inconclusive as they said that atmospheric conditions were changing and it was the man who was bringing about this change. He should be asked to behave. That's it.
Though, it is a statement issued in haste but there seems to be some truth in it. Without going into the detail of ozone layer manoeuvring and its ensuing effect on humans, it is necessary to realise our responsibility toward its protection.
The ozone layer is depleting because of our irresponsible behaviour. Disturbance in the ozone layer has a number of ill effects on the Earth, but what is of immediate concern is its warming effect.
There is no need of scientific discussion on the subject for a lay man's understanding of ozone layer and its depletion. What people need to be told is that their responsibility begins from prudential use of modern gadgets, devices, and natural resources to avoid residual effect of each product.
There is excessive emission of carbon dioxide, emission of smoke from vehicles, factories, felling and burning of forest, excessive use of plastic material and chemicals that goes into its preparation, toxic industrial waste and disposal of affluent in the open, contamination of water sources or disposal of different kinds of waste in pits made for this purpose.
There is a continuous process of neglect and indifference toward the ill effect that follow misuse of resources.
For example, the disposal of plastic bags and other plastic material by burning it is one fatal factor that has damaged the atmosphere. The smoke that rises from the plastic material carry carcinogenic fumes which is spread in the air and people inhale it, there is smoke from automobiles, factories and burning of fossil fuel that is enough to harm lungs of both human beings, animals and birds. The excessive emission of smoke from different sources is enough to impede growth of trees and other plants necessary to be there for the wellbeing of all living beings. These are only a few of those irresponsible behavioural pattern people can mend and ask their next-door neighbour to do so.
There are many other factors that may be attributed to irresponsible behaviour of the people living on Planet Earth that have contributed toward the natural behavioural pattern of ozone and have brought about atmospheric change disadvantageous to human beings.
There is going to be less air and less potable water in coming years. The Earth would be a hot place to live in. This is what the environmental scientists say in simple words. So, act now, this is what they demand from us.
