Hong Kong entrepreneur David Tang, the founder of clothing chain Shanghai Tang, has been awarded a knighthood in Queen Elizabeth II's New Year's Honour's list released Saturday.
The 53-year-old, who is already an OBE, is to receive the knighthood for his charity work in Britain and for promoting British interests in the former British colony of Hong Kong where he was born and is based.
British-educated Tang is best known as the man behind the chic boutique Shanghai Tang, and also as a newspaper columnist and cigar importer.
He is one of Hong Kong's best known socialites and his love of cigars led him to be named as the honorary consul for Cuba in Hong Kong.
He takes a place on the honour's list with British chat show host Michael Parkinson who recently retired after 30 years in television and with cloning pioneer Ian Wilmut who created Dolly the sheep in 1996.
Australian pop star Kylie Minogue has been awarded an OBE, while English rugby union coach Brian Ashton and world snooker champion, John Higgins, received MBEs. The queen's honours are handed out at the New Year and also in June to mark the monarch's "official" birthday.
