Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister former justice Ejaz Nisar on Sunday said that police inquiry of Liaquatbagh tragic incident, which claimed the life of PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto, is under way. However, judicial probe could not be started so far, as an honourable judge of the Lahore High Court (LHC) to conduct the inquiry has not so far been appointed.
Addressing a news conference, Ejaz said the provincial government has requested Chief Justice of the LHC for completion of judicial probe within seven days. He said the provincial government would extend all out assistance to the honourable judge who will be assigned the task of conducting judicial probe of the incident.
Expressing his deep sense of grief and sorrow over the killing of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto in a suicide attack in Rawalpindi on December 27, he said adequate security cover was deployed and the security plan was prepared in consultation with the PPP leadership. However, he said Ms Bhutto came out of the sun-roof of her vehicle unexpectedly on December 27. He added that some police officials also lost their lives in the tragic incident.
He announced that all the government and private educational institutions throughout the province will remain closed till January 3. Answering a question, he said all the former Prime Ministers and Chief Ministers had been provided adequate security cover. He added that Nawaz Sharif has been provided security beyond his entitlement.
To another question, he said that cases were registered against some people for creating the law and order situation and causing harm to public property. However, he said the government would never allow anybody to create law and order problem. He said the situation is returning to normal in Punjab and the government would not allow the miscreants to achieve their designs.
To another query, he said there was shortage of flour in the province, but the situation would be normal with the resumption of transport services. When asked whether there is any possibility of postponement of the upcoming elections, he said decision in this regard is to be taken by the Federal Government and Election Commission of Pakistan.
