Pakistan Muslim League (Q) on Tuesday said that law and order situation in the country, particularly in Sindh is not conducive and Election Commission should consider the ground realities before taking any decision to hold polls on January 8.
Addressing a joint press conference here after a party meeting, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, President PML-Q and Arbab Ghulam Rahim, President PML-Q Sindh said that holding of elections as scheduled seems to be difficult after the extensive riots particularly in Sindh following the assassination of former PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto.
To a question, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, however, said that party does not suggest for postponement of elections avoiding to expose its weaknesses but ground realities are not favourable, saying that Pakistan is more important than holding elections or anything else.
He added that party would inform Election Commission about the situation and it is the ultimate authority to decide keeping in view the ground realities.
PML leaders also sought to constitute two separate inquiry commissions - one for probing the assassination of Benazir Bhutto and another for bringing the elements - responsible for the extensive damages to the state and private properties as well as loss of over 60 lives across the country to justice.
Chaudhry Shujaat said that party was informed by Arbab Ghulam Rahim that there are extensive damages to the infrastructure in Sindh as well as law and order situation has yet to be normalised as the election in such a situation would not be beneficial. "We have to protect Pakistan as nothing is important than it," he remarked and blamed that a conspiracy was hatched against the country in a bid to destabilise it.
He informed the media that PML has passed a unanimous resolution to challenge the allegations levelled against the party soon after the killing of Benazir Bhutto, saying that an independent commission should be constituted to unearth the facts behind the assassination and PML would defend its side.
He also demanded of the authorities to constitute another commission to investigate what he called loot, plunder, rampage and riots, which took place after the incident.
Earlier, Arbab Ghulam Rahim, former chief minister Sindh, said he had suggested party and the government not to hold elections under the present circumstances as entire infrastructure in Sindh has been damaged by the rioters after the incident.
He alleged PPP for all the mess as he claimed that PML had in strong position to win the elections before December 27. He particularly held Asif Ali Zardari, the co-chairman and spouse of Benazir Bhutto, responsible for the mess. Arbab even said that he is the ultimate beneficiary of Benazir's murder as he had selected the guards for Benazir's security.
Former chief minister said that first the rioters and looters be brought to justice by registering cases against them then it would pave the way for holding free and fair elections. According to him, PPP workers along with the criminals who were released by breaking jails after the incident would manipulate the elections if they were held on January 8.
