Political Agent of Kurram Agency, Zaheerul Islam on Wednesday said the peace Jirga comprising members of Sunni and Shia sects will soon be succeeded in restoring durable peace and normalcy to the restive parts of the agency.
The agency's top administrator told APP by phone that Peace Jirga held fruitful talks with the elders of rival groups. "I am confident that the Jirga will soon be able to broker cease-fire between the warring groups", he added.
The security forces have been moved to Lower Kurram and had controlled very important hilltops and strategic points from the rival groups in the violence-hit areas.
He said normalcy is gradually returning back in some areas after government's prompt action against the miscreants. The PA said the Jirga members will continue their talks aimed at to decide different critical issues among the rivals.
About the Thal-Parachinar road, he said it would be reopened soon for traffic. The Thal Parachinar road is closed since November 16, 2007 when the bloody clashes erupted in the area in November last.
The political agent was not certain in relaxing the curfew in Parachinar city, which was imposed on November 16. It is to be mentioned here that from last 12 consecutive days, the curfew has not been relaxed due to which people were facing extreme hardships.
The people of Kurram agency are facing humanitarian crises as food items and medicines were lacking there. Despite the area is in the grip of harsh winter, some parts of the region have been without electricity for several days, said a local resident on the phone from Parachinar.
Clashes have taken place in several areas of the agency, including Pewar, Thari Mengal, Nasthikot Maqbal, Sadda, Balishkhel, Sangina, Minguk, Alizai, Makhizai, Bliamen, Jailamai and Inzari where groups have been using heavy weapons for about 10 days.
