The year 2007 has witnessed a tremendous increase in crimes related to vehicular theft as 5,120 four-wheelers and 10,055 two-wheelers have either been stolen or snatched at gunpoint in the city.
Alarmingly, there is an increasing trend in vehicle snatching/ theft incidents with every passing month, as per official statistics of Sindh Police regarding vehicular crimes in Karachi. According to the statistics, 1562 four-wheelers were snatched at gunpoint while 3558 others were stolen from the various parts of the city in the year 2007.
The monthly statistical review revealed that in January, 119 four-wheeler vehicles were snatched and 247 stolen, making a total of 366. In February, 106 vehicles were snatched and 322 were stolen, totalling 428.
In March, 103 four-wheelers were snatched and 301 stolen making a total of 404. In April 99 vehicles were snatched and 289 stolen, summing to 388. In May 118 four-wheel vehicles were snatched while 265 were stolen making a total of 383. In June, 103 vehicles were stolen and 228 snatched, summing to 331.
In July, the number of stolen vehicles raised to 124 while those of snatched to 327, making a total of 451. In August 137 vehicles were stolen and 288 snatched, as total becomes 425.
In September, 208 four-wheeler vehicles were snatched and 350 stolen, making a total of 558. In October 131 vehicles were snatched and 302 were stolen, totalling 433. In November, 166 four-wheelers were snatched and 308 stolen making a total of 474. In December 148 were snatched and 331 stolen, summing to 479.
Like four-wheelers, snatching of two-wheelers also showed increasing trend with every passing month of 2007 and the comparison of the statistics of January and December 2007, ie 574 and 960 would tell the whole story.
In January, 212 motorcycles were snatched at gunpoint while in December their number rose to 355. Similarly, 355 bikes were stolen in January 2007 and 605 in December 2007.
The statistic of other months shows that in February, 225 bikes were snatched and 338 stolen, were making a total of 563. In March, 268 two-wheelers were snatched and 373 stolen summing up to be 641. In April 257 bikes were snatched and 463 stolen, total becoming 720.
In May, as many as 272 bikes were snatched and 450 stolen, making a total of 722. In June 229 bikes were snatched and 431 stolen, totalling 660. In July, as many as 344 bikes were snatched and 526 stolen, making a yawning total of 870. In August, 306 bikes were snatched and 613 stolen, making a total of 919.
In September, 502 two-wheelers were snatched and 716 stolen summing up to be 1218. In October 250 bikes were snatched and 802 stolen, total becoming 1052. In November, as many as 376 bikes were snatched and 780 stolen, making a total of 1156.
The Gulshan-e-Iqbal town remained on the top of the list regarding four-wheelers snatching/theft crime, as a total of 1096 vehicles were snatched/ stolen from its limits during last year. Clifton (treated as a town by capital city police Karachi) stood the second with 691 and Jamshed Town remained third where 637 4-wheelers were snatched/ stolen.
For two-wheelers, Saddar town stood first with 1858, Jamshed Town second with 906 while Gulshan-e-Iqbal remained third with 884 snatched/ theft bikes in last twelve months. The towns of 'have-nots' are on lower rungs of ladder of vehicular crimes. Only 24 four-wheelers and 143 two-wheelers were reported to be snatched/ stolen from Orangi Town during this period of twelve moths. From Lyari, which is infamous for law and order, only 26 while 30 four-wheelers from Baldia town were stolen/ snatched from January to December 2007.
