Gianfranco Gorgoni's photography career is tied to the history of contemporary art from the 1960's to the present time. It is interwoven with the languages of performance, conceptual, and land art, and thus remains separate from, though tangentially related to photojournalism and its static and cold images of painting and sculpture, responding, rather, to improvisation and action, to the process and the place of the photographed event. The image, captured by Gorgoni, is therefore a document of a truth that interpretes not painted or sculpted objects, but the people and actors involved; in other words, it is an instrument for entering the environment, the territory, and the landscape where the work of art or its protagonist have existed and moved about, in a well defined geographical and cultural space, in time and in history. Thus his photography does not inform or refer so much as communicate or estabilish communication with what is happening or has happened; it is a way of experiencing a spectacle, which finds in the photograph a prolongation, capable of restoring, in another way, the language of the gesture and of the body, of the action and of the context. He began to develop this technique of recording art phenomena while still a young boy, in his early experiences with photography.
