The government has started releasing 31,000 tonnes additional wheat quota to the flour mills per day across the country from Monday (today), sources in the Food Ministry told Business Recorder. Sources said to overcome the acute flour shortage in the market, the government has decided to release additional wheat quota of 31,000 tonnes on daily basis to the mills.
For the last a few weeks, the price of flour in the local market has not only been soaring high with each passing day but the common man also not finding it difficult to have two times 'roti' for his family because of flour shortage.
"The hoarders are releasing a limited quantity of wheat to earn huge profits. The federal government has tried its level best and announced additional wheat quota to the flour mills but now it is the turn of provincial governments to take strict actions against the hoarders to meet the millers demand", sources said.
Earlier, the federal government has provided the list of the hoarders to the provincial governments, but the action was not taken against them. "The lists clearly shows that over 90 percent of the flour millers are involved in hoarding", they added.
Sources said the subsidy of about Rs 10-12 billion on the private sector for the fertilisers for wheat sowing is not being utilised properly. "The subsidy is given for the benefit of the farmers, but here the private sector is getting the full benefit of the subsidy", sources added. The poor farmers are forced to purchase DAP on exorbitant rates for wheat sowing. The DAP prices have shown an increase of 72 percent this year as compared to corresponding period last year.
