The Scotland Yard (SY) team probing the assassination of Benazir Bhutto was independently doing its job and the government had no objection if the team wanted to meet PPP leaders and conduct the autopsy of slain former prime minister.
This was stated by spokesman of Interior Ministry Brigadier Javed Iqbal Cheema (Retd) at his weekly news briefing here on Tuesday. "We have no objection if SY team wants to conduct the autopsy of Benazir Bhutto," he said adding that there was possibility that the team would meet the PPP leadership.
Cheema said that operation in Swat would continue against the remnants of the militant extremists to bring peace and tranquillity in the area. However, in the same breath, he said that the government could consider cease-fire during Muharram if the militants abandoned their activities. The government, he said, had taken all precautionary measures to ensure safety of sectarian leaders as well as Imambargahs and processions.
He said that provincial governments and all the security agencies had been directed to remain on high alert. Around 35 districts in the country had been declared sensitive and the government had beefed up security in these areas, Cheema added. The NWFP could face double threats during Muharram, Cheema said adding the province could face sectarian as well as terrorist threats at the same time.
About the December 27 Rawalpindi tragedy, which left Benazir Bhutto dead, he said that the government had not yet identified the suicide bomber. "Some press reports suggesting that the government changed the medical reports are merely speculative. The investigators have not reached at any conclusion. The investigation into the tragic incident is progressing and the team from the SY is assisting the probe. We should wait for the results of the investigation," he added. Prime concern of the foreign investigators was to know the exact cause of Benazir's death, Cheema said and added that the government was assisting the SY team.
