The Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (Tevta) has planned to launch vocational and skill training program for prisoners across Sindh, which is likely to be implemented from the current month of January, 2008. Officials at Tevta told Business Recorder here on Tuesday.
Further, they said that the authority has decided to facilitate around 20 thousand prisoners, which are being detained in 20 different jails of Sindh, adding that prisoners are being provided training in a highly unorganised manner, while the aim of Tevta programme is to rehabilitate them in an effective way and make them productive for the society.
They said that this initiative had been taken under the former Prime Minister's Skill Development Program to reflect the development of National Skills Strategy (NSS) besides promoting learning and upgrading of skills.
This Vocational and Skill Training for Rehabilitation of Prisoners (VSTRP) is also a part of NSS, which would play a vital role for sustainable development across the province. Highlighting the main features of the programme they said that it would be three-month programme that would deal with five different vocations included Construction, Agriculture, Textile, Cosmetology, Information Technology.
Moreover, they said that the provincial government has approved 27.568 millions for this project, while the inmates of Karachi, Hyderabad and Sukkar prisons would be entertained with the estimated cost of 10 million rupees in first phase. "Around 3,700 prisoners will be trained in initial stage and this project will further continue, if first phase creates positive impact in a society," they added.
