The library of Government College University(GCU) Lahore has developed a monthly bi-lingual newspapers index covering 28 national and international topics under the title "GCU News Papers Index".
It is a subject-index of significant articles published in five English and two Urdu national newspapers. It can help readers locate articles published on a particular topic.
Vice Chancellor GCU, Professor Dr Khalid Aftab, has praised the library, saying he hoped the exercise would include more articles from foreign papers and magazines to provide a profound global knowledge to Pakistani readers in the future.
The subjects cover include "art, media, culture, society, women, economics, Pak economy, government, international relations, language and literature, law, Pak-foreign relations focusing on India and Islamic countries, politics, military wars, religion, science and technology, sports, terrorism and war, exclusive articles from Sunday magazines and others. "Topic of the Month" is also selected, based on any popular current issue. The current volume of the index covers 800 entries of articles, columns and features.
Aftab said that the index not only helps researchers but also useful for interested in taking part in competitive examinations. Chief Librarian Abdul Waheed said hard copies of the previous issues were also available in the periodical section of the Post-graduate Library. The electronic volume may be accessed by clicking http://www.gcu.edu.pk/library/news_index.htm.
