Punjab Caretaker Chief Minister Ejaz Nisar has said effective measures have been taken to keep law and order, security and sectarian harmony in Muharram. Nisar chairing a meeting on law and order on Wednesday said the number of security guards with metal detectors to be placed at mosques, Imambargahs and other sacred places would be increased.
"Rangers will also be posted in sensitive areas, besides the system of police patrolling would be intensified. Agencies concerned should make concerted efforts for the improvement in law and order situation," he said.
"Law-enforcement agencies have been geared up and police patrolling has also been intensified. No leniency will be shown to elements engaged in misusing loudspeakers to rabble-rousing.
Similarly, a strict action will be taken against elements involved in publication, distribution or sale of sectarian literature. District peace committees are being formed proactive and provincial ministers would supervise all administrative affairs regarding maintenance of law and order. In view of general elections, it has become more important to maintain civic peace and tranquillity.
The provincial government, nazims and administration will make collective efforts for ensuring a peaceful atmosphere during Muharram. As maintenance of law and order is a prerequisite for progress and development, therefore, an effective strategy has been evolved for the promotion of harmony and tranquillity in the society.
Islam is a religion of peace, tolerance and brotherhood, therefore, people should make collective efforts for promotion of unity and harmony, "said the chief minister. He also said complete security cover would be provided to Zuljinnah processions, while effective measures have been taken for maintaining a smooth flow of traffic.
He said law and order situation is being closely monitored in all districts of the province. He averred that there is a greater need for co-operation and guidance of Ulema for ensuring religious harmony and peace during Muharram and a close liaison would be maintained with the religious leaders for this purpose.
The chi8ef minister made an appeal to the people to display unity and discipline and keep a close watch on activities of suspicious elements and co-operate with the government. Rangers Director-General Major General Muhammad Haroon Aslam said Rangers force was fully alert to help the civil administration in the province and would play its due role.
Punjab Police Inspector General Ahmed Naseem said DPOs would be responsible for the maintenance of peace in their respective districts during Muharram and police force has been alerted to cope with any untoward situation. Punjab Chief Secretary Salman Siddique, Secretary Home Khusroo Pervez, Secretary Law Sh.Ahmed Farooq besides Additional IGs and regional police officers of the whole province were also present.
