The city on Saturday once again was hit by prolonged power outages, as Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) further restricted power supply to Karachi to 250MW.
Sources informed Business Recorder here Saturday that the Wapda has reduced its supply to the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) second time in a week following the countrywide power shortage.
Earlier, the authority had restricted its supply to Karachi from 500 MW to 300 MW without any prior notice that had made the power crisis of the city more severe as KESC has not sufficient amount of electricity in hand to cater to the power demands of the city.
Residents of several areas of the city including Hassan Square, Liaquatabad, North Karachi, Landhi, Korangi, Agrataj, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Sohrab Goth, Lyari, Nazimabad, Saddar, I. I. Chundrigar Road, North Karachi, Nagan Chowrangi, Nazimabad, FB Area, Guru Mandar, Lasbela, Golemar etc, suffered prolonged power breakdowns on Saturday due to this power shortage.
Consumers of the affected areas told Business Recorder that for the last several days they had been subjected to prolonged power outages and all their attempts to invite the KESC attention towards their problems failed.
Following this cut in supply by Wapda, the KESC is facing the generation shortfall of about 150 MW as it has only 1490 MW in contrast with the power demands of the city presently laying around 1640 MW. To overcome this power shortage, the corporation has carrying out 2-3 hours long rotational load shedding in several areas of the city that might continue in coming days, KESC officials added.
