PML-N senior vice President Makhdoom Javed Hashmi on Monday held PML-Q responsible for the present flour crisis and asked why the NAB was lip tightened on the wheat scam which caused a loss of about $2 billion.
Presiding over a meeting of Muslim leaguers at his residence, Hashmi alleged them of minting money under the cover of so-called crisis and said that the PML-Q leaders were involved in smuggling of flour to the neighbouring countries.
He said that the federal minister for food and agriculture spread disinformation that there was bumper wheat crop and 85 millions tonnes extra wheat was available with the government and the farmers were warned to sell their wheat immediately otherwise they could face huge loss.
He said that the farmers sold their wheat at throw away price of Rs 385 to 425 per maund. When the scam was unveiled and the traders' representatives from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia and UAE approached Pakistan for purchasing of the wheat, the government instead of telling the truth propagated that there was bumper price.
Hashmi claimed that the former prime minister of Pakistan imposed ban on the export of wheat on September 15 but 1.5 millions tonnes wheat was exported at the rate of $200 and due to unknown reasons later one million tonnes of wheat was imported at the rate of $400, other expenses were apart from the price.
He said that last December, Trading Corporation had signed another deal to purchase 80,000 tonnes wheat at the rate of $510, similarly, the caretaker government decided to import 15 to 20,000 tonnes wheat at the rate of $530.
On the other hand, the PML-Q office bearers who had hoarded two million tonnes wheat were selling the same at the rate of Rs 800 to 1,000 per maund. He claimed that former federal minister had also held former chief minister Punjab Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi responsible for wheat crisis in the country.
