The Supreme Court Tuesday dismissed PML (Q) candidate Mian Munir's appeal against his disqualification to contest the 18th February general elections. The Returning Officer of NA 122, Lahore had declared Mian Munir disqualified to be a candidate for being convicted in the Supreme Court attack case in 1997.
The R O's decision was upheld by the Lahore High Court election tribunal. A three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice Muhammad Nawaz Abbassi heard Mian Munir's appeal against the Lahore High Court judgement on Tuesday.
Justice Abbassi observed how a person could become a member of the Parliament who had used derogatory remarks against the apex court.
"The court cannot grant relief to such a person," Justice Abbassi remarked. The court however, allowed the appellant's counsel Wasim Sajjad to file a review petition in this regard. Other members of the bench were Justice Muhammad Qaim January Khan and Justice Syed Zawaar Hussain Jaffery.
