Business community has submitted claims of around Rs 400 million losses that it suffered from December 27 till Friday. The government has fixed January 21 as the last date for the receipt of claims forms. However, the business community hoped that the date might be extended.
Out of total claims the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) received till Friday evening, around 70 claims mentioned losses of around Rs 150 million. KCCI President Shamim Ahmed Shamsi told Business Recorder that more claims were expected to be filed on Monday.
He said the claims were received in duplicate shape so that the original claims could be forwarded to the office of the District Coronation (DCO) and a copy would be retained so that the chamber could pursue the cases with the concerned authorities.
KCCI's Senior Vice President Iftikhar Ahmed Shaikh said that the chamber was expecting that the transporters would submit their clams by Monday. He hoped that the last date of filing the clams might be extended due to Muharran holidays and late disbursement of claim forms by the DCO.
He said that a meeting with the Provincial Minister for Industries, Labour, Transport, would be held on Monday, and hoped that decision about an extension in the date would be announced. Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) Chairman Shaikh Fazl-e-Jalil said that the association received only two claims.
Pattern-in-chief of North Karachi Association of Trade and Industry (NKATI) Captain Moiz Khan said that the association received claims of around Rs 250 million up till now.
These included claims for three industrial units, including a unit owned by Sri Lankan investors, which were completely destroyed; two units, which were burnt and ransacked; four trawlers, two of them were completely burnt and goods loaded on these trawlers were looted.
