The department of wildlife and ecology of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) in Lahore is arranging a two-day international conference on "education for wildlife sustainability" and a training workshop on "natural photography and GIS" between January 30 and 31.
Caretaker Chief Minister Ijaz Nisar will be the chief guest in the opening and Governor Khalid Maqbool will chair the concluding sessions being arranged with the University of Essex, University of Glasgow, Higher Education Commission (HEC), WWF-Pakistan and the Developing Partnerships in Higher Education.
Experts and scientists from Pakistan, Britain and Australia will present papers on various aspects of wildlife sustainability and conservation. Lectures and filed training on "natural photography" and "GIS" will also be arranged on the second day.
The conference will foster collaboration for conservation, management and recovery of wildlife; contribute to conserving the ecological integrity of key ecosystems in Pakistan; help stakeholders achieve effective, efficient and mutually beneficial biodiversity conservation in Pakistan; foster continental communication regarding the management, conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.
The conference will identify priority actions and opportunities for conserving and managing species and ecosystems, identify and address current and future threats to biodiversity in Pakistan, identify areas of emerging interest or opportunities for biodiversity conservation, and implementation approaches, and funding opportunities, develop outreach mechanisms to effectively engage with other organisations, develop, implement, review and co-ordinate specific co-operative conservation projects and programmes, integrate projects and programmes into the conservation priorities of Pakistan and promote exchanges of information, technology, best-practices and training.
