NWFP Governor with the approval of the Prime Minister of Pakistan has ordered the establishment of three Regional Co-ordination Offices for the NWFP and the Federally Administrated Tribal Areas. These three Regional Co-ordination Offices are Northern Region, Central Region and Southern Region.
Peshawar, Charsadda, Mardan, Nowshera, Swabi, all districts of PATA and the defunct Hazara division, Khyber, Mohmand and Bajour Agencies and FR Peshawar have been included in the Northern Region while Peshawar will be its headquarter.
Similarly, Kohat, Hangu and Karak, Kurram and Orakzai Agencies and FR Kohat have been included in Central Region while Kohat will be its headquarter. Likewise, D I Khan, Bannu, Tank and Lakki Marwat, North Waziristan Agency and South Waziristan Agency, FR Bannu, FR D I Khan, FR Tank and FR Lakki Marwat have been included in the Southern Region while Bannu 7 will be its headquarter.
THE FOLLOWING FUNCTIONS HAVE BEEN ASSIGNED TO THE OFFICERS OF THE RESPECTIVE REGIONAL COORDINATION OFFICES:
-- to ensure that law and order is maintained in terms of relations between FATA and adjoining settled districts
-- Regional Co-ordination Officers shall be responsible to the provincial government and the Governor of the NWFP (as agent to the President for tribal areas) through the Home Secretary and Chief Secretary, Government of NWFP;
-- to establish institutional linkages between the provincial govt, district governments, tribal areas as well as Civil Secretariat FATA
-- to dispose of revenue, FCR and administrative/service appeals;
-- to facilitate and strengthen District Governments in implementation of government policies and;
-- to act as representative of the government at the regional level.
