Lawyers' community on Friday staged a demonstration and organised a rally under the leadership of District Bar President Najaf Ali Chava and General Secretary Mushtaq Adil. Participants shouted slogans against the Government for keeping deposed chief justice, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and Supreme Court Bar President in illegal detentions.
They vowed to continue their struggle till the achievement of their objective of independent judiciary. They castigated the decision of Pakistan Bar Council to reduce the protest to Thursday only. President High Court Bar Association, Habib-ullah Shakir said that they would celebrate January 31 as 'Iftikhar Day', as announced by Sindh High Court Bar Association.
Shakir also requested the international human rights organisations to declare deposed chief justice of Pakistan 'a prisoner of conscience'. Senior Lawyers requested representatives of civil society and people from all walks of life to organise rallies on January 31.
They also requested the Amnesty International, International Bar Association and other organisations to join the protest. They said that Lahore suicide attack was an attempt to scare the lawyers' community but such tactics could not compel them to stop their struggle.
They said that leaders of bar associations including Aitzaz Ahsan, Tariq Mahmood and Ali Ahmed Kurd are being refused proper medical treatment. They said that the government has cut off water connection of deposed chief justice residence and condemned the treatment being meted out to him, members of his family and the legal fraternity.
