The mourners on Friday held a protest demonstration after the funeral prayers of three of the people who were killed in a suicide bomb attack on a city Imam Bargah on Thursday. At least, ten people were killed and 25 others were injured by the suicide attack.
The protesters held the government responsible for the act committed at the Mirza Qasim Baig Imam Bargah situated in the Jehangirpura locality of the old city area. On Friday, hundreds of mourners offered the Nimaaz-e-Janaza of three persons, including caretaker of the Imam Bargah Waqar Hussain Mirza, at Kohat Chowk. Later they gathered at Qissakhwani and chanted slogans against the government and culprits involved in the incident.
Workers of Imamia Students Organisation (ISO) carrying placards and banners also staged a protest demonstration outside the Peshawar Press Club and demanded the government to arrest the killers of mourners. After marching on the Shershah Suri Road, they reached outside the press club, where they staged a sit-in and demanded early arrest of the terrorists involved in the killings of mourners.
Addressing the protesters, a local Shia leader Muzaffar Ali Akhunzada said they had informed the government about the terrorist activities of a defunct group in the city, but government had not taken any precautionary measures. He said they had conveyed the names of the terrorist to the government with the advent of Muharram, but government had not taken the matter seriously.
Adil Bangash of the ISO and Syed Kumail Abbad of the Imamia Organisation Pakistan also addressed to the protesters and asked the people to frustrate the designs of United States and its local proteges trying to spark off sectarian clashes in the country.
On Thursday, the Imam Bargah's mourning session was heading towards its conclusion when an unidentified suicide bomber forcibly barged into the Imambargah and detonated explosive material wrapped around his body.
SHO Imtiaz Ahmed said after entering the Imam Bargah, the suicide bombers opened three fires on the orator and then detonated the bomb. The explosion caused a stampede and mourners jumped out of the small courtyard, which was strewn with human flesh and other debris.
