The Higher Education Commission (HEC), in collaboration with leading engineering universities of China, has announced to establish Pak-China University (PCU) in Islamabad. The visiting delegation of the HEC finalised the decision in China and formally inaugurated the PCU's Beijing office during its visit.
The university will teach 5,600 students and produce 200 PhDs, 700 Masters and 900 Graduates, annually. To give the university a jump-start, a two-year MSc. programme in selected disciplines will begin in fall 2008 at a temporary campus located in Sector H-8/1.
The HEC delegation also held successful discussions with representatives of the Chinese Ministry of Education about the details of two important government level agreements, ie the inter-governmental and the bilateral agreement. These agreements would be finalised by the end of February and later on would be signed in Beijing. The delegation met the officials of the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, and North China University of Electric Power.
The two sides finalised the list of universities in the consortium, master's programs for 2008, admissions criterion, curriculum details, textbooks and the arrangements for selection of faculty agreed upon. The founding Rector and Director of Programmes for the PCU were also identified and would be formalised in February. For the furtherance of the programme, the representatives of the Chinese Consortium Universities will visit Pakistan in March.
