The semester system would be introduced soon in medical colleges of Sindh to put the education system at par with US education standards said Professor Naushad Sheikh, Vice Chancellor of Liaquat University.
Speaking at Meet the Press programme at Nawabshah Press Club on Thursday evening, the Vice Chancellor said that the semester system would start with the first year admissions in LUMS and its affiliated Nawabshah Medical College (NMC), Chandka Medical College (CMC) Larkana and Ghulam Muhammad Maher Medical College, Sukkur.
He cited that the semester system was already being exercised at Aga Khan Medical College Karachi and Asra Medical University Hyderabad. The same would be introduced at Dow Medical College (DMC), Karachi very soon.
He said that the students, who would get education under semester system, would face no difficulty in the medical profession in other countries. Besides, raising standards of our education, modern training of doctors, proper utilisation of medicines and better treatment of patients could also be made possible.
Professor Naushad said that this system would keep the students engaged in academic activities throughout the year, in addition to providing advanced knowledge to the teachers. He added that the subjects of community health, public health and information technology would also be taught to the students, so as to make them fully aware about children's diseases and their treatment.
For IT training the expertise of Quaid-e-Awam Engineering University would be hired, so that the subject of IT could be promoted at the Nawabshah Girls Medical College. The vice chancellor said all the details about the coming semester system would be shown on the website.
He promised that the admissions in first year MBBS would be made purely on merit and basis of eligibility of the candidates. To a query, he said that the administration of all medical colleges had been asked to promote sports activities in their institutions, adding that financial assistance would also be extended to them.
Sheikh said all out potential would be utilised for upgradation of Nawabshah Medical College and Hospital and added that the problems faced by teachers, as well as, students would also be addressed. He said it would be tried to inter linked NMC with Liaquat University. Director Admissions LUMS Colonel Dr Ejaz, Dr Shehzad Laghari, Professor Shamas Sheikh and Professor Abdul Qayyum Memon were also present on the occasion.
