Lahore Nazim Mian Amer Mahmood has said that they were considering the option of issuing driving licenses of international standards in Lahore with the assistance of the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra).
He said this during a meeting with Nadra General Manager (Projects) Brigadier Aleem Majid Ahmad (Retd) here on Saturday, disclosed a spokesman of City District Government Lahore (CDGL).
Senior officials of both the city government and Nadra were also present in the meeting. Nadra officials briefed the Nazim that the new licenses would have a computer chip and all the traffic violations and the fines paid by violators would be computerised. Also, drivers violating traffic rules would be given points and the license would be suspended after crossing the limit of points, and the record of points would be kept in the driver's license chip. The option of depositing fines at Nadra kiosk would also be introduced.
The participants were told that the introduction of new driving licenses, which would valid for 10 years, would end the possibility of fake driving licenses and change in drivers' records.
While addressing the meeting, the Nazim said in collaboration with the Nadra, the CDGL had started the registration of new-born children in its 150 union councils in 2004. He said under the old system, 80 percent of the birth certificates were bogus and for this reason it had no authenticity. "New computerised birth certificates, issued by the Nadra, are now accepted throughout the world," he added.
