Experts at a workshop observed that employing cleaner technologies is imperative to control harmful emissions, earn more revenue and meet the climate change challenges.
These experts cited tremendous potential in the cement industry in Pakistan and called for developing strong linkages for promoting Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects.
Secretary Ministry of Environment, Ijaz Ahmed Qureshi inaugurated one-day workshop on 'Carbon Credits Potential in Cement Production Sector of Pakistan,' organised by Ministry of Environment.
"This potential can be tapped to gain additional revenues and addressing the environmental and social development values," the Secretary Environment said.
With capping carbon, we can generate more revenue and earn more revenue, he said, adding, it is also equally beneficial for our environment.
"The global carbon market is now getting well established and has touched the level of billions of dollars. Countries like China, India and Brazil are in the lead and the investors in these countries are benefiting from these win-win commercial opportunities," he said.
Pakistan, he said, also has a significant potential for generating carbon credits from cement manufacturing and development of CDM projects in this sector can provide great opportunities to domestic and foreign investors.
"We encourage the public and private investors to come forward and invest in CDM projects," the Secretary said.
He said the ministry is undertaking all necessary initiatives to promote carbon financing in Pakistan. "The vision behind promoting projects under CDM is to get our due share from global opportunities and to address our environmental issues."
In his opening remarks, Additional Secretary Environment, Sami Khilji said continuous use of fossil fuel across the world had resulted in global warming - a phenomenon threatening the human development and sustainability of the world nations.
"By carbon capping, we can earn more revenue and avert negative impact of global warming on our economies," Khilji said. He mentioned to different initiatives of the Ministry for developing Clean Development Mechanism and urged awareness raising among all stakeholders for effectively implementation of this mechanism.
"Cement industry is of vital importance and should take lead to set better examples for Carbon Credits," he said. Khilji hoped concrete proposals by the workshop participants, to help adopt the future course and go for the cleaner technologies.
Saadullah Ayaz, Acting Head CDM Cell called for transfer to cleaner technologies to better the environment and earn more revenue. "Industries can avail additional benefit of carbon credit by shifting to cleaner technologies," he said.
CDM, he said, has been set up in line with Pakistan's accession to Kyoto Protocol and for approving and facilitating CDM projects for achieving national sustainable development goals.
"A national CDM strategy has been approved that offers all outstanding support for attracting investments and capitalising the carbon business under the CDM initiatives," he said.
Saadullah said the CDM Cell works public and private sectors for attracting investments in energy efficiency, renewable and alternate energy with technology transfer and capacity building. He urged the participants to come out with concrete proposals for promoting the Clean Development Mechanism offered support and expertise to achieve this goal.
