Father of a suspect arrested in connection with the assassination of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto has said that his son is not involved in her assassination. Sher Zaman was arrested last month from Dera Ismail Khan after a 16-year suspect Aitzaz Shah told the investigators that he was also part of the planners.
Akbar Khan, father of Sher Zaman, told a news conference that the police have arrested his son under a conspiracy and that his son did not belong to any extremist group. "My son is innocent and he has nothing to do with the murder of Benazir Bhutto, Akbar said.
He said that Sher Zaman was earlier arrested by the police under the charges that he was involved in hijacking of containers in DI Khan but the court declared him innocent and was freed. He said that police were upset over his release and considered it as their insult. He added that his son was arrested from his home on January 18 and was handed over to Punjab police on 34 days physical remand.
The police failed to prove him guilty and was shifted to Adiala Jail, Akbar said adding that he is not allowed to meet his son. He said that the suspects arrested in connection with the assassination of Banazir Bhutto belong to Mansehra and two belong to other areas.
"My son was implicated in the case as he belongs to Waziristan as the police have tried to put blame of Benazir's assassination on tribesmen and Baitullah Mehsood under a conspiracy," he said. Akbar said that Baitullah Mehsood has already rejected claim of his involvement in the Liaquat Bagh tragedy saying that he is not against Pakistan and its leaders.
