The Pakistan Railway has asked the federal government to provide Rs 8 billion for the rehabilitation of the property and rolling stock damaged in riots on and after December 27, 2007. The Ministry of Railway has referred the rehabilitation project to the Planning Commission to recommend the required funds.
Railways authorities have claimed that at least 60 railway stations, 128 locomotives, and 130 bogies of different mail/express trains were burnt during riots after Benazir's killing.
The report said that 28 locomotives were burnt--16 in Karachi division, 8 in Sukkur, two in Quetta and one each in Lahore and Peshawar division. Railways authorities said that 13 engines are repairable, while 15 require reassembling of all parts.
Similarly, 80 out of 130 bogies are repairable while entire signalling system would be replaced, and 48 out of 60 railway stations could be repaired and other 12 would be entirely rebuilt.
