Committee formed to probe Rawalpindi suicide attack: Cheema

The government on Tuesday claimed of arresting large number of alleged terrorists during the last three months and recovering explosives, weapons and suicide jackets in huge quantity from their possession.
"Law enforcement and intelligence agencies have arrested 442 terrorists and militants," said Interior ministry spokesman Brigadier Javed Iqbal Cheema (Retd) at his weekly news briefing. The claim came a day after Pakistan Army's Surgeon General Lieutenant General Mushtaq Ahmad Baig was killed in suicide attack in Rawalpindi.
Security has further been beefed up for the politicians, said Cheema, who offered condolence to the bereaved families of Rawalpindi incident. We will bring the perpetrators to justice. A high-level investigation team headed by Saud Aziz, city police officer (CPO) Rawalpindi has been constituted to probe into the tragic incident.
The spokesman said the NWFP government is further strengthening the security of NGOs following Monday's incident in Mansehra, where terrorists gunned down four staff members of an NGO.
The provincial government is making all out efforts to track down and bring the culprits to justice, he added. Out of total, he said, 17 terrorists had been arrested from Punjab, 26 from Sindh, 13 from NWFP and 122 from Balochistan during the last three months. In February, 124 militants have been arrested in Swat. He claimed that 60 of the arrested are those who were held with suicide jackets.
As many as 140 alleged terrorists have surrendered to the law enforcement agencies in Swat, said Cheema adding that the government could not rule out the involvement of foreign hands in terrorist attacks across the country. However, he gave no further details.
The law enforcement agencies have recovered 45-kg explosive, 8 detonators, 5 remote controls with chargers and 10 hand grenades from militants arrested from Punjab. Of 26 terrorists arrested from Sindh, 43-kg explosives, 44 detonators, 2 rocket launchers and 53 hand grenades have been recovered, said a written statement distributed to media.
From 13 arrested in NWFP, 50,096-kg explosives, 26 hand grenades, 10 explosive jackets, 16 dynamites, 14 detonators, 4 rocket launchers, 11 missiles, 32 mortar shells and 24 safety fuses have been recovered. Form those arrested and surrendered in Swat, 770-kg explosive and 2 explosive laden vehicles were recovered.
The law enforcement agencies have recovered 96 detonators, 75-kg explosives, 112 hand grenade, 246 mortar shells, 56 mines, 19 rocket launchers and 18 instant explosive devices (IEDs) from those arrested in Balochistan, said the statement.
