Independent judiciary is in the interest of the people and the Pakistan People's Party stands for strengthening the judiciary with the support of other political forces, PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari said Thursday.
"A weak judiciary had always been manipulated by dictatorship," Asif Zardari said, while addressing a meeting of losing PPPP candidates from NWFP and Balochistan.
He said his party had already submitted a constitutional amendment bill in the Senate to make far reaching changes in the mode of appointments of judges and giving the judiciary financial and administrative independence. The party also proposes to set up a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to recognise the victims of injustices, Zardari said.
He said it is due to struggle of the workers that PPP has emerged not only as the largest party in the centre but also had its candidates elected in all the provinces.
"You all have worked for the common cause and those who have lost or been made to lose should continue to work for the achievement of the objectives from outside the parliament," he said.
"PPP wants to change the system by removing the anomalies introduced in the Constitution as power must be restored to the people to whom it belongs," he said. The PPP co-chairman assured the workers that the party would formulate polices in the light of the advice of its members.
