The so far smooth power game took an 'anxious' turn on Friday when the allies of President Pervez Musharraf predicted fresh elections within two months, and Pakistan People's Party (PPP) struggled to choose a candidate to become prime minister.
Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid president Shujaat Hussain told media here that he expected an early breakdown of the alliance of politicians opposed to Musharraf's rule that could lead to holding of parliamentary polls again. "It can happen that I give date (to my party) for new elections in two months," he said after meeting Aftab Sherpao.
Shujaat met President Musharraf several times in past two days before he came out with what could be described an open warning to the opponents of ex-military chief. Experts believe that Musharraf can emerge a spoiler and 'drown the system with himself' if he finds no other way. In this context, Shujaat's statement is being taken as threat for those opposing Musharraf. "Impeachment of a constitutionally can be counterproductive and can backfire," warned Shujaat.
