The Karachiites on Tuesday continued to suffer from prolonged power outages with some areas experiencing 3 to 5 hours-long load-shedding. The total power shortage on Tuesday increased to 310 MW, which was a major reason of the frequent power breakdowns in the city.
The power demand of the city in these days has increased to around 1,950 MW, while the KESC is capable of providing only 1,600-1,640 MW. Since the power demand has increased, the city has been experiencing repeated fluctuations and 3 to 5 hours long power outages, making the life of Karachiites miserable.
Technical faults in the KESC's old infrastructure resulting in power suspension to different residential and commercial parts of the city has made the situation worse. Over dozens of feeders were tripped and cables damaged in different parts of the city resulting in hours-long power suspension to large number of areas.
Residents of several areas of the city including Keamari, Agrataj, Bhitai Colony, Hassan Square, Liaquatabad, North Karachi, Landhi, Korangi, Gulshan Iqbal, Sohrab Goth, Lyari, Nazimabad, Saddar, I I Chundrigar Road, North Karachi, Nagan Chowrangi, Nazimabad, FB Area, Punjab Colony, Dehli Colony, Gizri, and Gulistan-e-Jauhar suffered these power breakdowns.
On the economic front the prolonged power disruptions have caused losses worth millions of rupees to the business community while inflicting damaging effects on the country's exports. KESC officials have already ruled out the chances of any betterment in the current power crisis of the city and have said that the citizens would face the ongoing load-shedding till the 2012.
