On the directive of the Nazim, City District Government Karachi (CDGK), Syed Mustafa Kamal, the CDGK has started construction work for establishing big departmental and superstores in the city government's markets, inter-city bus terminals, cinema halls and other recreational projects.
These projects are being launched under the Nazim's public-private partnership policy. As per the policy, modern departmental and superstores in the markets will be established with private sector investment so that people could shop for all consumers' items under a single roof.
Initially, these stores will be established in CDGK's markets at Clayton road, Guru Mandar Chowrangi, Soldier Bazar, Soldier Bazar No 3 and Wadhumal Odharam Market Haqqani Chowk as joint ventures.
The Enterprise and Investment Promotion Department in this regard has invited technical and financial offers by April 4, 2008 from private sector companies showing interest in setting up such stores in co-ordination with the city government.
Moreover, in the transport sector, the CDGK has decided to establish bus terminals for inter-city buses at appropriate places so that traffic pressure inside the city could be reduced. These bus terminals will be constructed in Deh Bhatti Amri, Scheme-33 and Super Highway for which E&IP department has invited offers from interested firms on joint venture or public-private partnership basis by April 9.
Further, the CDGK has also prepared many schemes in order to provide increased recreational facilities and to overcome the shortage of cinema halls whereby cineplex complexes and auditoriums will be established at various places in the city. These will contain cinema halls, food courts, recreational facilities for children, indoor games, gymnasium, parking and other civic facilities.
