Punjab police have contacted the political administration of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) to make sure the immediate arrest of Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud, absconder in assassination of Benazir Bhutto and other accused in this case, said Dr Syed Azhar Nadeem, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab here on Monday.
"There are many terrorist groups behind the suicide bombings in the country and it will be premature to say something about involvement of foreign countries in these terror strikes," the IGP said while addressing a news conference where he was flanked by Regional Police Officer Nasir Durrani and City Police Officer Syed Saud Aziz.
"We have reached near the terrorist network and it will take a very short time to bring them to task and completely bust this notorious network in the country," Dr Nadeem said.
He said that Rawalpindi police have completed the investigation of six out of total eight terror incidents. "Eight terrorist attacks occurred in Rawalpindi in past and we have arrested the culprits behind these suicide bombings," he added.
He said that the investigation into assassination of Lt General Mushtaq Baig, Surgeon General of Pakistan Army, is under process and hopefully police will shortly trace the people behind this suicide bombing incident, in which eight people including General Baig were killed. He said that the civil society always supports police but there is a dire need to develop mass awareness about tackling crimes. For this purpose, he added media can play a vital role.
When people would know their responsibilities it would be difficult for the terrorists and criminals to get shelter in the society, he said. Dr Nadeem urged the need to impart special training to the police officials to help them effectively fight against the menace of terrorism.
To a question, he said that his department was paying full attention towards the prevention of every kind of theft because the stoppage of crime would also help in reducing terrorism in the country.
He said that in the urban areas Mohafiz Force and Rescue-15 are being made more effective by enhancing their capacity to fight against criminals whereas in the rural areas of Punjab, old community night watch man system has been revived with the help of police to safeguard the public's life and property.
The IGP said that the terrorists have huge and well-organised networks and breaking them all is gigantic task and it will be attained with the active co-operation of people. "The challenge in front of us is very big than the little achievements we have got," he added.
He said that there are several groups involved in extremism and terrorism but due to certain reasons their names could not be disclosed. He said that the police department is accountable not only to the government, but also to the legislation, judiciary and people. The media perform accountability of police on behalf of public, he added.
