The National Transport Ittehad (NTI) has announced to keep public transport off the roads on March 21, ie 12th of Rabiul Awal, as a sign of respect for Eid Milad-un-Nabi (peace be upon him), and warned of two-day strike if the prices of petrol and diesel were not brought down to February 29 level.
In a joint statement, issued on Tuesday, NTI Chairman Salim Khan Bangash, President Raja Muhammad Rafique, Taj Khan Bangash, Haji Rauf Khan, Nazir Hussain, Itiminan Zai, Shah Rom Khan, Ahsan Kha Kohati, President of Anjuman Bus Malikan Ashraf Banglori, warned they would give two-day wheel-jam strike call if the government did not lower the prices of petrol and diesel.
If the government failed to do so, they warned, they would give strike call in their meeting scheduled for March 25. The transporters said they would raise the fares of buses, mini-buses and coaches by rupees three from March 20. "We are compelled to increase the fares as the diesel prices have been increased by Rs 17 from May 2005 to March 15, 2008, causing immense increase in the expenses of diesel," they added. They further stated that the prices of oil, spare parts and tyres-tubes had also increased.
