At least 250 buffaloes were burnt alive and over 300 received injuries when a fire gutted four dairy farms in cattle colony on Thursday. Official in the fire brigade department told Business Recorder that the fire broke out in one of the farms when a cattle-farmer burnt timber to remove flies from the farm, which engulfed three more farms.
He said that the department received information about the incident at 3:30 pm. Six fire tenders were employed to extinguish the fire which successfully brought the fire under control. However, cattle-farmers accused fire fighters on their sluggishness in handling the situation. They said, "had the fire fighters reached on time, large number of cattle could have been saved."
APP adds: The Joint Secretary, Karachi Dairy Farmers Association, Shaukat Mukhtar said that the incidence took place in a dairy farm on Road No 8 in cattle colony at 3.30 pm, when the owner of the farm ignited a fire to generate smoke in order to protect the animals from sea fly.
Giving the estimate of the loss, Mukhtar said that farm owners have incurred a loss of nearly Rs 14 million as the price of a buffalo is around Rs 70, 000. The association secretary urged the government to compensate the losses because the dairy farm owners lack financial strength to rebuild their farms and resume their business.
