On behalf of Pakistan Bangladesh Forum I offer my heartiest felicitation to the people of Bangladesh on the occasion of 37th anniversary of the independence and National day of Bangladesh.
The people of Bangladesh alongside the Muslims of India struggled against the foreign rules for creation of a separate homeland for the Muslims of sub-continent and were successful in creating the state of Pakistan on 14th August 1947. Bangladesh remained part of Pakistan until 1971 when it declared independence and became a separate Republic. Bangladesh is now governed under a Constitution adopted in 1972 which provide for a parliamentary form of Government with Prime Minister as the head of the Government and President as a ceremonial head of the State.
The salutary provision in the Constitution of Bangladesh providing for appointment of a fully empowered neutral non-political Caretaker Government before every general election in the Country has added credibility and transparency to the process of election besides providing political stability in the Country. Bangladesh played a lead role in the founding of South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) in 1980 and since the founding of SAARC Bangladesh held the post of its Secretary General for two terms.
Despite hurdles, Bangladesh maintained an average growth rate of 5% since 1990. The most significant achievement in the economic field by Bangladesh has been the expansion of its middle class through microcredit schemes of Grameen Bank introduced by Dr Muhammad Yunus who was awarded noble prize in 2006.
The people of Pakistan and Bangladesh share common bonds of religion, culture, social values and a heritage for which they struggled jointly in the past. The common values shared by the people of Pakistan and Bangladesh has kept the feelings of brotherhood alive which can go a long way in opening new vistas of cooperation between Pakistan and Bangladesh in the field of commerce, trade and industry, Pakistan and Bangladesh as members of Organisation of Islamic Conference are already working in close cooperation and have identical views on many problems faced by Muslim Ummah. Pakistan and Bangladesh share a common destiny as the two important upcoming forces in South Asia and we look forward to meaningful, sustained and long lasting relations between the two countries in a wide ranging field of relations.
