Corps Commander Lieutenant General Ahsan Azhar Hayat has said that in connection with improvement of living standard of the soldiers the Pakistan Army has devised a comprehensive plan through which Rs 10 billion will be spent on renovation of existing accommodation and construction of new accommodation at various garrisons in the country, a press release issued by ISPR said.
Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony of soldiers' accommodation at Chhor Cantonment as part of the "Year of the Soldiers" programme, a welfare plan announced by the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Kayani, he said besides the construction of accommodation the Chief of Army Staff has also announced various welfare measures for the soldiers aimed at further improving the battle efficiency of the troops.
He said the measures include increase in ration scale, free education for the children of lower ranks, uniform allowance and improvement of medical facilities. On the occasion, Corps Commander Lieutenant General Ahsan Azhar Hayat lauded the professionalism of troops deployed in the area and urged them to further hone their skills in order to meet potential threats.
Later, the Corps Commander formally carried out the ground breaking ceremony of soldiers' accommodation as planned in far flung satellite garrisons with a view to provide maximum possible comfort to the soldiers and their families keeping in view the rigorous they undergo.
Earlier on arrival at Chhor, the Corps Commander was received by General Officer Commanding (GOC) Major General Abdul Aziz Tariq. The ground-breaking ceremonies were also simultaneously conducted at Karachi, Malir, Badin and Hyderabad Garrisons.
At Malir, General Officer Commanding, Major General M.A.Q. Khan Shahid carried out the ground-breaking ceremony. In Hyderabad, General Officer Commanding, Major General Abdul Aziz Tariq conducted the ground-breaking ceremony while Brigadier Khalid Mahmood Malik and Brigadier Muhammad Rafique conducted the ground breaking ceremonies at Karachi and Badin Garrisons respectively.
It may be mentioned that the year 2008 is declared as the Year of Soldiers by the Chief of the Army Staff, General Ashfaq Kayani in his dedicated vision for soldiers. This includes commitment to profession with pride and honour.
