A public awareness programme on Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) was held in the Seminar Room, OPD building, at Dr Ziauddin University and Hospitals, North Nazimabad Campus. Three speakers spoke on various aspects of the disease.
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is an acute or chronic inflammation in the pelvic cavity. PID is a generic term for infection of the female uterus, fallopian tubes, and/or ovaries as it progresses to scar formation with adhesions to nearby tissues and organs. This may lead to tissue necrosis with/or without abscess formation. A single episode of PID can result in infertility, and the rate of infertility increases with each infection.
Talking on myths and misconception of PID, Professor Rubina Hussain, Chairperson, Department of Obstetric & Gynaecology, Dr Ziauddin Hospital said that PID is a disease of reproductive age and common in sexually active females. PID usually accompany symptoms of fever, tenderness & rigidity in lower abdomen, cervical motion excitation) fluctuating cystic swelling in pouch of douglas (in pelvic abscess).
Sometimes the person suffering from the disease is unaware of it, as there are no sign and symptoms. It is important to note that PID can occur and cause serious harm without causing any noticeable symptoms.
Talking on the consequences of the disease, Professor Rubina said that the diseases could lead to frozen pelvis heavy menstrual cycle, chronic pelvic pain, infertility and ectopic pregnancy. She emphasised that awareness of PID is very important and stated that women should know about the disease and its outcomes.
Dr Anjum Afshan, Associate Professor, Dr Ziauddin Hospital spoke on how to deal with PID and what preventive measures should be taken. A proper history and good clinical examination can lead you to the diagnosis. She said empirical treatment should be started, due to the serious complications of PID. She further said that the effects of the infection may be permanent, even after the disease is cured.
This makes early identification by someone who can prescribe appropriate curative treatment so important in the prevention of damage to the reproductive system. Treatment of the disease is to start broad-spectrum antibiotics like Ofloxacin, Metronidazole, etc. Laparoscopic identification is helpful in diagnosing tubal disease. Preventive strategies are improving lifestyle, giving health education, screening for high risk, safe sex practice. Protective factors of PID are pregnancy, sterilisation, use of oral contraceptive, barrier contraception (condom, diaphragm).-PR
