'Early Childhood Development-from Understanding to Initiatives', edited by Dr Bilal Iqbal Avan, was launched by Oxford University Press (OUP) at the Health Sciences Auditorium, Aga Khan University, here on Tuesday.
Despite the wide array of theoretical frameworks and research in the discipline of child development, there is a dearth of guidance on how to implement that knowledge in real world settings.
The book nicely bridges the gap between theory and practice, and successfully presents the integration of psychology, sociology, education and public health in the area of early childhood development and care in the much-needed cross-cultural context of developing countries.
The book takes this interdisciplinary approach a step further, and provides a detailed account to conceptualise and implement community-based programmes to achieve optimal early childhood development. The text has been developed on the premise that organises efforts to ensure a better future for children that are essential and require a basic understanding of the principles of a child's growth and development, and the necessary skills to observe these, scientifically.
According to OUP, this volume will interest child development practitioners, advocates, students and caregivers who will find that it furthers their understanding of the issues involved and assists in the promotion of their individual and collective endeavours.
Dr Avan is an epidemiologist and public health specialist. He is at present Assistant Professor, Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Department of Community Health Sciences, The Aga Khan University, Karachi.
