The Supreme Court of Pakistan disposed of 595 cases during the month of March 2008, whereas 748 new cases were instituted. The backlog of cases in Supreme Court on April 1, 2008 was 15,339, whereas the backlog March 1, 2008 was 15,186 cases.
A court spokesman said that 748 new cases were instituted during the month of March 2008, thus the progressive total of pending cases as on March 31, 2008 came to 15,934. He said that out of these, 595 cases were disposed of in March, bringing the backlog on April 1, 2008 to 15,339 cases.
Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar constituted several Benches at the Principal Seat, Islamabad, and Branch Registries to expedite case hearings and clear the backlog. The spokesman said that the Chief Justice and other Judges of Supreme Court remained committed to accelerated/expeditious disposal of the cases to diminish the backlog. The Judges continued to hear cases in various benches with the aim to minimise the backlog and provide relief to the litigants, he added.
