The Sindh government has planned to enforce labour laws in all industrial areas across the province to streamline the wages distribution process. Sources in labour department told Business Recorder on Tuesday that Directorate of Labour Sindh and Minimum Wage Board would jointly work to safeguard labour rights especially in the distribution of labour wages.
They said that due to lack of awareness about their rights, at present, the workforce had been deprived for health working environment and basic medical facilities at numerous industrial units. Keeping eyes on it, department therefore, has evolved a comprehensive strategy for protecting labour rights besides adopting other positive measures aimed to provide healthy working environment to workers at their workplaces, they added.
To a question, they replied that department was striving to strictly enforce the labour laws regarding wages distribution and added that laws would only be effective, if department of labour and Minimum Wage Board (MWB) would initiate joint efforts in the imposition of labour laws.
They said that seminars and workshops were being conducted in different industrial areas across Sindh to spread awareness about labour rights and responsibilities among labours, hoping that it would help in raising awareness among them about their rights and responsibilities.
When asked, they said, "labours can only be supportive for the department in the enforcement of labour laws, if they are aware of their rights and working responsibilities". They said that department would also establish an inspection team consists of MWB and department officials to pay surprise visits at industrial units and other workplaces.
They added that team would check the services, being provided by employers like medical facilities and safety precaution measures and it would also examine salary ledger of working unit to ensure that wages were being paid as per labour laws. It may be mentioned that newly elected Prime Minister of Pakistan Makhdoom Yousuf Raza Gilani had announced to increase the minimum wage rate and fix it at Rs 6000, which directives would be issued shortly.
