The Horticultural Society of Pakistan (HSP) has been advised to develop new varieties and encourage cut flowers for export purposes. Punjab Governor Khalid Maqbool gave this advice at the 150th Flower Show, organised by HSP in collaboration with Pakistan Horticulture Development & Export Board (PHDEB) at Bagh-e-Jinnah, Lahore, on March 28.
According to details available here on Tuesday, he also announced that office would be provided to HSP at Bagh-e-Jinnah to organise its activities in better surroundings. The Flower Show was held at the same place as it was held exactly 150 years ago. Ms Nosheen Sarfraz, Finance Secretary, said the event was aimed at creating awareness about rich horticultural background of Lahore.
HSP was established in 1851 by Sir John Lawrence and Lord Dalhousie. Sir John established the Lawrence Gardens, now Bagh-e-Jinnah. Except for the two world wars and the Partition year, the HSP holds two flower shows every year.
HSP Secretary General Saeed Khan said: "Pakistan does not grow extremists, but some of the world's most excellent flowers; and the proof is all around us. Standing here in the middle of such variety of outstanding flowers, this is Pakistan and this is what we should be projecting."
The HSP should now not only be disseminating knowledge on all aspects of horticulture but be informing the public of the environmental benefits and how horticulture could improve personal and community wellbeing. The Society should be the first point of contact for any information relating to horticulture, and its values should be targeted to a larger and more diverse population, he added.
