ICE Futures electronic May sugar fell 0.04 cent to 11.65 cents per lb by 8:16 am, trading 11.55 to 11.77 cents. Volume at 4,681 lots. Traders said strengthening dollar could put soft commodities like sugar under pressure at the start of the second quarter of 2008.
Efforts by India to reduce bulging domestic stocks through exports will dominate talks at the Asia International Sugar Conference in Mumbai. Analysts expect Indian sugar exports will be double last year's 1.7 million tonnes. The Indian Sugar Mills Association said it has contracted 850,000 tonnes of sugar exports so far this year.
The Russian government said it will keep a high tariff on raw cane sugar imports in May to prevent excessive shipments that could damage sugar beet growers. Focus also turns to switches as players move positions out of May contract, which is due to expire on April 30.
