Sindh University vice-chancellor, Mazharul Haq Siddiqui has said that revival of student unions will provide again an ample opportunity to students to upgrade their potential and explore their leadership qualities in the best possible manner.
He expressed his views, while addressing in a debate contest on "Media is playing negative role in our Society" organised by Bureau of Students Tutorial Guidance Counselling Services and Co-curricular Activities (STAGS) here on Wednesday.
Large number of students were present on the occasion while two students from each institute and department took part in the debate contest. Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr Rafia Ahmed Shaikh, deans of the faculties, heads of the institutes and departments, Registrar Muhammad Saleh Rajar attended the event.
Vice Chancellor said students unions provide a platform which help produce talented leaders for future in every sphere of life as the university has always supported students unions.
He expressed that with their best abilities the students would perform well to uplift the standard of the university. Lauding the students performance in the debate contest, he said that media has played essential role for the society in terms of its reformation and development. Large number students while favouring role of media in the society said that it has been keeping in well informing the society about day to day development and change occurred in any part of the world.
Expressing their views about negative role of the media the some speakers said that media has created many problems and changed behaviours of the society rather to educate. They said that masses are unhappy with the role of media in now days especially with electronic media for its unhealthy programs.
They said that development of the media like internet the people have forgotten healthy routine specially reading of books.
Naila Shaikh of the Institute of English Language and Literature secured first position, Sarwan Latif Janwery of Mass Communication secured second while 3rd position secured by Miss Sharmeen Panhwar of the Institute of English Language and Literature and Consolation prize was given away to Farooq Azam of the Institute of Chemistry.
The Director of the STAGS Ms Hanifa Kazi highlighted objectives of the STAGS and its achievements. The purpose of holding co-curricular activities is to enhance the level of confidence among students so that they can be solution oriented in their future. The vice chancellor gave away shields and cash prizes and certificates to the students.
