Trader Action Committee (TAC), representing 68 major markets in the city, has decided to replace all high energy consuming lights with the energy savers by April 14to save 120 megawatts. TAC Chairman Siddique Memon told APP here on Wednesday that all member trade bodies had "unanimously" resolved to switch over to energy savers in response to the Prime Minister's decision to save energy.
"We welcome this decision. The replacement of bulb and tubelights with the energy savers by 350,000 shops will save Rs 250 million to shopowners in the metropolis", he added.
Memon said that traders would save at least 50 percent of electricity for the city. This decision had been taken on voluntary basis, he said. He said that this had also been decided that traders would shut off all neon signs in the city from April 15.
Memon pointed out that the process of replacement of high-energy user lights with the energy savers had already been initiated in several markets in the city. This would be completed by April 14, he added.
To a question, he said that traders would not shut down their shops after sunset. "Instead we will use energy savers to save electricity in the city," he observed. The TAC chief said that a sufficient quantity of energy savers was available in the city and more energy savers would be imported if needed to meet the demand.
